Land has been a valuable commodity since America’s early days. Today, land grants are major boons to businesses, organizations, and individuals.  Governments may award a land grant to a business that will improve a piece of neglected property, or as recompense for military services. Land grants are highly valued in the 21st century, while historically, their significance is both ancient and far reaching.

 

Rewarding the Militia

 

Following their military service, Roman soldiers were frequently gifted denarii and/or land as a reward for their services to the Empire. This gift of land as a prize for military service appeared in America following the Revolutionary War, when parcels of land were awarded to the veterans. The Military Act of 1812 was a Congressional act that stipulated gifts of land across the country were to be awarded to volunteer soldiers of the War of 1812; Illinois alone set aside 3.5 million acres of tillable land for this purpose.

 

 

Land for the Future

 

In the 16th century, land grants were provided by Britain, Spain, Portugal, and the Netherlands for the purpose of establishing overseas settlements; recipients were then legally required to improve their land by planting crops and erecting a house. This provision led to the establishment of America’s original 13 colonies. Through the 19th century, the growth of railroad was made possible through land grants; the astounding transcontinental railroad would drastically change America’s future forever.

 

Since their inception, land grants have supported the growth of the Nation. Today they support business who provide economic growth and employment, organizations who seek to preserve and educate, and individuals who hold tight to the American dream.

The process of obtaining a land grant is not as simple or as quick as people may think. First of all people need to understand what a land grant is and what land grants are typically used for before they apply for a grant.

The way the program works is simple. The federal government will provide the local and state governments with the opportunity to purchase private land that houses local wildlife and plant life that might be in danger. The government will then award these local and state governments funding in an effort to keep the wildlife and natural habitat the way that it is.

Should the local and state government not be able to provide for the animals and wildlife in the area that they purchased the federal government will offer a land grant to individual groups and organizations who vow to restore and preserve the surrounding environment. This can be done by preserving the natural wildlife and plant life. There are also available federal funds that allow these organizations and individuals to provide for and keep the natural surrounding habitat the way that it is.

It is through these government programs that many local and state parks and areas can preserve the existing wildlife and plant life and provide a natural environment when the community development continues to grow.

How Land Grants Help Develop Today’s Modern Transportation Systems

The United States transportation system was not always as it used to be. In fact, transportation across the United States was almost impossible before the development of railways and railroads. It is believed that the United States transportation system would not be in effect if it were not for the use of government land grants that allowed railway and railroad companies to develop the railway system that is used today.

In 1862 the United States government passed an act titled the Pacific Railway Act. This government proposal allowed railways and railroad systems to develop and use public land in an effort to create a crossing railway system across the United States. If the railway company could not use the government land this act allowed them to sell off the land to private companies and use the profits in an effort to finance any railroad projects or to develop existing railway station.

It is believed that through this federal land grant project the United States was able to develop a transportation system that is uses today. In fact, land grants are credited with moving the transportation system that was used by the United States into the modern century. That is because without a railway system the United States would not have a means to transport goods from the East Coast to the West Coast. Today Railway systems and transportation are quicker than ever however without the use of the land-grant provided by the federal government railroads and railway systems would never have been developed and we might not have the system we have today.
